Rebuilding Nigeria's Healthcare: Landmark MOU with US Pharmacopeial Convention Paves the Way for Pharmaceutical Innovation and Economic Growth

Amid challenging times, Nigeria remains committed to rebuilding under the steady leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, as highlighted by Hon. Prof Muhammad Ali Pate, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Services, on X (formerly Twitter).

Recently, the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC) signed a transformative Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the US Pharmacopeial Convention (USP). This strategic partnership is a significant milestone in advancing Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure and pharmaceutical sector, as endorsed by the Pharma West Africa Leaders Club.

The MOU outlines plans to establish a centralized facility for bioequivalence studies and advanced analytical laboratory services, ensuring high-quality locally produced pharmaceuticals. By leveraging USP’s global expertise, the partnership aims to boost local manufacturing capabilities, reduce dependence on imports, and enhance the quality of healthcare in Nigeria.

Key objectives include the development of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and pharmaceutical-grade excipients, targeting 70% local production and creating 30,000 new jobs by 2030. This initiative is poised to drive economic growth and improve health outcomes across the country.

The agreement also strengthens regulatory oversight through the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), aligning with the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII) and the Renewed Hope Agenda. As Nigeria takes decisive steps to reimagine its health sector, we express our gratitude to Dr. Abdu Mukhtar, PVAC Coordinator, and Jude I. Nwokike, Vice President of USP, for their unwavering commitment to this transformative partnership.
